Spence Porter Predictions
Although the date and location are yet to be confirmed, it seems certain that unbeaten IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence and WBC counterpart Shawn Porter will attempt to unify in the autumn. Super WBA ruler Keith Thurman, who holds a victory over Porter and is preparing for his own showdown with the legendary Manny Pacquiao on July 20, was happy to analyse the match between his two rivals, for Seconds Out.
“I do see Spence winning the fight,” Thurman says, instantly ruling out a seat on the fence. “He has great size as a welterweight, great physical attributes. Shawn likes to rough people up, but when he was dominating it wasn’t really against welterweights – Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi are 140lb fighters that came up, Kell Brook could handle the barrage and return the favour with simple one-twos. I could do the same thing and I don’t see why Errol Spence is any different, and he’s already beaten Kell Brook. Porter really has to get on the inside but Errol showed that up against a smaller guy, Mikey Garcia, he can make himself a tremendous obstacle; he’s really good with his spacing, and he also has a nice, little uppercut that can come in handy against Shawn Porter. Shawn needs to make it a brawl.”
Thurman is keen, should he defeat Pacquiao, to meet the winner of Spence vs Porter.
“All these talks about Errol and Shawn unifying the WBC with the IBF, but where did that WBC belt come from,” the undefeated Floridian asks, rhetorically. “It came from my inactivity and now I want my titles back. I told everybody if me and Spence were to ever fight it most likely would be for three world titles. I’ll take the challenge, I wasn’t gonna take it this year on my get-back year, he was No. 2 for a reason but I’ll take the challenge.”
